Why a color therapy brand has an AI scientist as an advisor
Star's doctoral work at the MIT Media Lab was titled Computing Point-of-View. Twenty years before anyone said “lens” as a metaphor for a worldview, he was building machines that modeled how a particular person sees: what they find beautiful, what they notice, what a text feels like to them. One of those machines, Aesthetiscope, read a poem through five modes of perception and rendered the impression as color. Loving Victorious Beings does the inverse with glass: it puts a color in front of the eye and lets the perception follow. He has been thinking about exactly this transaction his whole career.
The record
Star earned his bachelor's and master's in electrical engineering and computer science at MIT and his PhD at the Media Lab, in Marvin Minsky's orbit. He co-created ConceptNet, the commonsense knowledge graph that became the most-cited work in his record. His 2003 paper on sensing emotion in text won the IUI Best Paper Award and, fifteen years later, the ACM IUI Impact Award. He was founding chief scientist of Hunch, a taste-recommendation company acquired by eBay, where he then served as principal scientist; chief scientist of Artsy; co-founder of ArtAdvisor with Lucas Zwirner, acquired by Artsy; a collaborator of the Guggenheim Museum; and a teacher at MIT of courses joining art and technology. His curated record holds thirty-nine publications and more than six thousand six hundred citations.
The poet
Since an awakening that began in 2016, Star has written as Starheart. His book Word Becomes World is forthcoming in 2026, and his poems live at starheart.love, where visitors can read them karaoke-style in a WebGL movie palace he designed. His sign is ✦.
